Back in May our playgroup had a butterfly release. We purchased this kit and the caterpillars were kept in this tiny cups with all the food they'd need until they hatched. After they were in their cocoons we transferred them to their pavillions where they stayed until they were butterflies. We had four and they all made it to butterflies! Wyatt named them Lightning McQueen, Thomas, George and Darby (all after characters from his movies)! 
The boys each had one pavillion with 2 butterflies in it. We took them to the backyard to release them.

We opened the pavillions and one set immediately took off flying! They wasted no time getting out of those pavillions.
The second set, however, was a different story. They just stayed there. The boys were waiting for them to fly.
Still waiting...
Even their little cousin Thylar was waiting for them to come out. She's so cute!
She tried to reach in and grab them, but was told no.
That didn't make her too happy : (
Finally, we had to take them out by hand.
They played in the flowers for awhile.
Eventually, they stumbled around the deck for a bit and tried several times to fly. I thought they might be injured. But they eventually flew away and we never saw them again.
